Hilde Lenaerts

*1991 (Turnhout, BE)

Current location: Gent, BE

Artist statement

"Lenaerts is focused on the strength in each photograph. She is interested in building a certain atmosphere. The photograph can show something simple but also something monumental - the feeling is more important than the subject. The image becomes readable to her "when it all comes together" - this way of seeing is quite broad. Lenaerts is fascinated by symmetry, shapes and patterns. Light can also play a part in the photographs as an atmospherical compound. By making combinations, sometimes including people, she creates an additional layer. Finding a balance between people and the surroundings she chooses becomes like a game, or even an obsession - Lenaerts is always looking for tensity.

Making photographs abroad brought Lenaerts to the conclusion that she is able to make sense of the world wherever she might find herself. Being able to rely in her way of seeing is important to her. Making photographs can be comparable to solving problems - for Lenaerts it’s a way of creating peace in an overly-visual world."
